Ancient Wood

Having become interested in wood carving a couple years ago, I found it really interesting to find out about Kauri. It's very ancient wood, carbon dated at 50,000 years old or more. The oldest homosapiens first appeared around 40,000 years ago. Kauri is being dug up from bogs (where the logs fell long ago) and milled for various uses. Check out the web site by clicking the picture.

There was a place in Ashland called "Timeless Timbers" or something. They pulled huge, virgin timbers out of the bottom of Lake Superior. I don't think they are 50,000 years old though!
