Braden Update

Daycare
Braden started daycare this week at a Children's World on the U of M campus near Sarah's hospital (UMMC Fairview). I visited Braden on my split and was able to rock him to sleep after feeding him a bottle. Here's what he looked like:

Of course, those of you who know the boy know that he's not a very good napper, especially in a crib. Sooooooo...ten minutes later, here's what he looked like:

We are very happy with this child care center. I had to visit several before settling on this one, and I really like the staff who are with Braden every day. Some of his first day activities included reading Twinkle Twinkle Little Star with his teacher, having his teacher sing to him, playing pattycake with his teacher, a visit from Daddy, and meeting his new friends.

Rice Cereal
A book that we've consulted (and found to be insightful) said that it is the baby's brain that wakes it up at night, not its stomach. The book theorizes that food doesn't play a role in sleeping through the night, but rather the schedule and the parent's attentiveness to the child's sleep cues. Apparently this book is research based and quite respected. That's all well and good, but here's my research. Braden has been getting up every 2-4 hours to eat since he was born. The evening after we took this picture (his first dinner of rice cereal), he slept 12 hours. He has continued to sleep 10-12 hours each night since. As far as I'm concerned, food makes a difference.

I'm so glad he is sleeping so well, what I nice thing for mommy and daddy! Isn't intersting the difference between research, theory, and practice...sometimes real life results are what matters!

I know that Children's World is excellent. Did you ever meet our friends Karina and Damian (Anya's godparents)? Damian used to work there.

I'm surprised there are plausible theories that a baby's food intake doesn't affect their sleep/waking schedule. Food definitely makes a difference! However, from what I've read, waking every 4 hours or so is still perfectly acceptable at a few months of age. Although I think that's mostly in reference to babies still 100% breastfeeding, so it probably doesn't apply to Braden.... never mind.
